Walter Harvey “Sonny” Wolfe III, age 74, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2022 at his home in Mims, FL, surrounded by his loving family. Sonny was born in Montgomery, W.VA. to parents, Walter H. Wolfe, Jr. and Lona Lee Lofton Wolfe. He was predeceased by his only sibling, a sister, Charlotte L. “Sherry” Kosmetatos.
Sonny lived in West Virginia until age 7 at which time he and his family moved to Miami, FL. In his early teens the family moved to Levittown, PA where he lived until he entered the U.S. Navy in September 1965. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1969 having served two separate tours of duty in Vietnam.
After retiring from a successful career with AT&T, Sonny had a career as a Div. 1 Women’s Collegiate Softball Umpire. Also, during his umpire career, he umpired many youth baseball games, highlighted by being chosen to umpire the All Star Youth Baseball Tournament in Cooperstown, NY where he was given the honor of umpiring at Homeplate for the Championship Game.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Sherry Hatfield-Wolfe; 3 children; 4 bonus children; 9 grandchildren; a number of other loving relatives and a host of wonderful friends.
Sonny is fondly remembered by his family, his friends, and his community as that man who always practiced “Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty”. If you ever asked Sonny how he was doing, his response was always: “AH, EVERY DAY’S A BONUS IN MY WORLD AND MY ONLY JOB IS TO CHOKE THE LIFE OUT OF IT”.
