Thomas Jesse Hughes, 82, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the Edward M. Poe Hospice Care Center in Titusville. Tom was born and raised in Bakersfield CA.
His job at Rockwell brought him to Titusville in 1968 where he worked on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Tom was presented the Silver Snoopy Award by Astronaut John Young for his exceptional welding ability on the Apollo/Soyuz Docking Module. He retired in 1995 a very decorated employee having received numerous awards and recognition for his dedication and innovative ideas.
After retiring Tom enjoyed traveling throughout the US with his wife and family. He built and flew RC model airplanes with his friends. Besides traveling, his hearts’ passion was the time he spent restoring his father’s 1949 Chevy Truck which won numerous awards in car shows.
Tom is survived by his wife of 48 years Mary Hughes; his daughter Dawn, her husband Cle Petersen of Titusville FL; their children Anson, Joshua (Jessica), Elizabeth (Devin) and four great grandchildren Charlotte, Magdalene, Kolbe and Josephine. Daughter Tammy, her husband Wayne Donaldson of Ravenel, SC; their children Derek and Trish (Kris). Tom has a sister June, and four brothers Richard (Carol), Steven, Delbert and David (Mary) in California. He has multiple nieces and nephews throughout the US.
A viewing will be held Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at North Brevard Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 10:00am followed by a graveside service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Emmaus Hall after the graveside service.
