Obituary

Robert J Casey, Jr died July 1, 2018 in a car accident at the age of 35.

Bob graduated from Lake Mary HS, Florida and enrolled in the US Army signing on as a paratrooper. Bob served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan during the conflicts ongoing there and was promoted a number of times ending with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

During his time in the service Bob earned the Purple Heart (earned in an ambush in Afghanistan on his unit where he was shot but continued to fight until they prevailed). He was also awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (twice), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal (four awards), the National Defense Service Medal, and many others too numerous to note here.

After qualifying for Green Beret training, he passed the Green Beret “hell week” tests (actually three weeks), the 18 week Pashtu Green Beret language course, and the Small Units and Tactics test. Bob was injured during the Robin Sage exercise. After surgery he opted to leave the service in 2015 to spend more time with his children and to finish his degree.

Bob was a good student. He relished in research, earning a number of awards and honors. He was part of a team that published a research paper at Campbell University on the diversity of the local botanical biome. Bob recently graduated from Campbell University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.

Bob was a hockey player and sports fan. He played for the East Longmeadow HS hockey team and later regularly played hockey at the Ft Bragg ice arena. He delighted in scoring goals. He followed the Patriots, Red Sox, and Bruins.

Bob was a dedicated and loving father. With his children living 8 hours away in Florida, Bob regularly made the commute from North Carolina to Florida to spend a weekend with the kids. Always the teacher, the coach, always with humor…he loved his children and they loved him.

Bob is survived by his 3 children Haylen, Kinley, and Reagan Casey, his brother Christopher and wife Jennifer, his nephew Randall and niece Zoey, his mother Carol and father Robert, his Grandmothers Constance Casey and Geraldine O’Donnell as well as many uncles, aunts,  cousins, numerous brothers in arms and friends.  He was predeceased by his Grandfathers John W. Casey and William J. O’Donnell.
