Obituary

Mary Jane Scully passed away peacefully on August 28, 2021 in Melbourne, Florida.

Born and raised in the tough and gritty western town of Butte, Montana, Mary Jane met her future husband, Ed Scully, following WWII.  They later married and moved to Bozeman, where Mary Jane worked as an operator for Mountain State Telephone and Telegraph Company, while Ed studied engineering at Montana State University.  After Ed’s graduation, Mary Jane and their young family moved to southern California where they began building a new life together and a career in the aerospace industry.  As the Apollo space program prepared for flight in Florida, Mary Jane and six of their children joined Ed at the John F. Kennedy Space Center.  Mary Jane and Ed built their new life in Titusville, and raised their family in the young, vibrant and rapidly evolving community.  Mary Jane served regularly as a volunteer at St. Teresa Catholic School, as a Girl Scout troop leader, and as Girl Scout cookie chair.  She also served as a Red Cross Volunteer, fund raiser for the March of Dimes, and later worked as a “pink lady” auxiliary at Parrish Medical Center.  Mary Jane was also actively involved in the McDonnell Douglas Wives Association.

After her children were grown, Mary Jane worked part-time in both the retail, and banking industries.  Mary Jane and Ed were heavily involved in St. Teresa Catholic Church, and Mary Jane ran the religious gift shop associated with the church for many years, before retiring to travel with Ed.  Mary Jane loved to travel, and enjoyed human observation and interaction.  Mary Jane loved to read, and to walk for exercise.  She was always interested in current events, and was a skilled conversationalist.  Mary Jane was never shy about sharing her opinion.  She enjoyed playing Bridge, and working in her yard growing flowers; particularly roses.  Mary Jane also loved hosting her grandchildren for sleepovers, where they baked cookies, and played board games.

Mary Jane and Ed spent much of their retirement years visiting friends and family across the United States and Europe.  Mary Jane particularly loved to visit Yellowstone National Park, and visiting Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Mary Jane was particularly proud of her family and their individual accomplishments.  She is survived by her eight children, twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will take place on October 2, 2021 at 10am at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Titusville.
