Hildegard Lindsay

Hildegard Viola (Hilde) Wupperman Lindsay, age 96, went to heaven peacefully on Easter Sunday, surrounded by her loving family with her favorite waltz music playing in the background. We envision her smiling and dancing with her husband, Buddy, in a field of lovely Texas bluebonnets. Hildegard was born in Austin, Texas on August 11, 1920, the fifth child of Elsa (von Rosenberg) and Walter Wupperman. She and her siblings, Alice, Walter, Alfred, and Helena (all deceased), were raised in Austin. She met her future husband, Earl (Buddy) Vogelsong Lindsay, at a square dance where he was the caller, and they married in 1941. Buddy was a petroleum engineer, and together they moved from one small Texas oil town to another, with their growing family in tow. Hilde and Buddy always wanted a large family, and they were blessed to have seven children. It was a joy to grow up in a close-knit family. We moved to Titusville in 1962 when Buddy was hired as an electrical engineer by Pan American at Cape Canaveral. Mommy was special for so many reasons. As a loving mom, she taught her children and grandchildren traditional homemaking skills, including cooking and sewing, and she taught us the importance of shared holiday celebrations and traditions. She loved telling stories about her German heritage, and she talked of her childhood, her friends, relatives, the family farm, and her famous uncles who were Texas landscape artists. Hildegard was so proud of her heritage – the von Rosenberg Family of Texas - German immigrants who first settled in Austin in the early 1800’s. She attended the von Rosenberg Family reunions in Texas, even after moving to Florida. The reunions are still an annual event and family members number in the thousands. Hilde had many friends who would say she was loyal, faithful, generous and caring. She could be feisty at times and spoke her mind. Mom could be funny and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a “real lady,” and always tried to look her very best. Her social life was full of activities and no one was ever a stranger; she could make a friend of everyone. One of the main activities she shared with her husband, for over 50 years, was Square dancing, Scottish and Folk dancing. Each week Mom looked forward with eager anticipation to her Friday night dancing. Hilde was a talented seamstress who loved to sew and made beautiful garments including many of their dancing outfits. Mom was a creative genius with fabric! She fashioned works of art like quilts, wall hangings, pillows, doll clothes, baby clothes and blankets, and stuffed animals. She was a charter member of Space Coast Quilters and spent many enjoyable hours quilting on a quilting frame set up in her living room. Mom enjoyed music and the lovely flowers and birds in her gardens. She was active in the TOPS club, and was a long-time volunteer at the North Brevard Historical Museum. Hilde and Buddy traveled the U.S. in their camper van upon Buddy’s retirement. Mom valued her independence and drove herself around Titusville into her 90’s. She loved attending church services and Sunday school and was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Titusville. Hildegard was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Vogelsong Lindsay, Sr. Our sweet mommy is survived by her seven children who will always try to be loving and caring in her honor: Mary Eva Tedder, Sally Ann Townsend, Margaret Ellen (and Bernard) Coveney, Betsy Jane (and Tim) Deuerling of Jacksonville, Bonnie Susan (and Phil) Elmore, Joy Kathleen (and Sean) Murphy of Montauk N.Y., and Earl Vogelsong (and Kimberly) Lindsay, Jr. Also 10 grandchildren: Tony Stringer, Roger Tedder II, Karen Leider, Laura Craig, Beth Driscoll, Jonathan Deuerling, Zachary Deuerling, Shannon Murphy, Lindsay Murphy, and Christina Leider. Also seven great grandchildren: Heather, Whitney, Christopher, Caitlyn, Robin, Ella, and Ava; and one great great grandchild, Emma. Hilde’s family wishes to thank the caring staff at Carriage House Assisted Living and the Lighthouse Group of Hospice of St. Frances. We also thank the First United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held from 5-7pm Monday April 24, 2017 at North Brevard Funeral Home. Services will be celebrated at First United Methodist Church at 10am Tuesday April 25, 2017. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
