Harold A Yount MD

August 16, 2022

Obituary

Harold Alexander Yount, M.D. passed away peacefully on August 16, 2022, following a brief illness.  He was 100 years young.  Harold was a beloved doctor, husband, father, and member of the community and was legendary for wearing bowties.

Harold was born and raised in Statesville, North Carolina, the oldest of six siblings. After graduating from the Citadel Military Academy, he attended Bowman Gray Medical School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He then took post-graduate training at Duke University to pursue a specialty in pediatrics.  In the late 1950s, Harold established a permanent pediatric practice in West Palm Beach, Florida which he pursued for many years until segueing into emergency medicine.  He ultimately became chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine concurrently at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach and Doctor's Hospital in Lake Worth.  He subsequently worked in the ERs at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Lake Placid Hospital.  When he took time off, he and his wife of 57 years, Anita “Pinky” Yount, spent countless days in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas on their sailboat.

After his retirement from full-time medicine, Harold accepted numerous locum tenens positions, for which he traveled across the country, accompanied by Pinky.  Once he retired permanently, he and Pinky relocated to Titusville, Florida where he earned notoriety for his frequent forays into the Indian River on his windsurfer, well into his late 90s, and also for his homemade brownies.  Harold was a member of the Indian River Masonic Lodge No. 90, was Past Patron of Chapter 6 of the Eastern Star, and served as an auxiliary member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Harold is survived by his wife Pinky and five children: Gwen Anne Yount Carden, Harold Alexander “Alex” Yount, Jr. *(Brenda), Becki Lee Pope Ashley (Brian), Phillip B. “Chip” Pope III (Pam), Stephen Leo “Steve” Pope, as well as 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Marion Ruth Sams (Mitch) and brother, Robert Whitten Yount (Sally), numerous nieces and nephews, and his “best buddy” Leo the German shepherd. Harold was predeceased by his parents, Margery White Yount and Harold Horace Yount, sister Winnie Frances Yount, and brothers, Arthur White Yount, and George William Yount.
