George Vern Bortle passed peacefully at his home in Mims, Fl at the age of 72 on November 8th 2019. He was surrounded by his loving wife Cindy of 25 years and his children, Allyson, Robyn, Steven and Nick.
George was born September 19th, 1947 in Sewickley, PA and grew up on Neville Island, PA. He loved to buzz around on his go-cart as a child, then later graduated to racing Hydroplanes. He enlisted in the Navy for six years shortly after his 17th birthday. During the Vietnam War, he served in Okinawa Japan and Vietnam as a technician for the Hawk Missile System. George moved to Florida in 1974 when he took a position as a computer technician at NASA. From there he held several positions in technology and videography before retiring. George had a love for science, technology and was an avid adventurer traveling across the US. He loved camping, repelling mountains, riding motorcycles, going off roading, boating and kayaking. He enjoyed working on computers, was a ham radio operator and could fix anything he puts his hands on. He served as a volunteer fire chief and fireman for over 45 years in Brevard County and 5 years in PA. George helped anyone in need and saved countless lives. George Bortle was “one in a million” and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded by his mother, Vera Bortle and his father, George W. Bortle.
He is survived by his devoted wife Cindy Bortle. His children Allyson Carter and her husband Vince; Robyn Bortle and her husband Matthew Geiling, Steven Bortle and his wife Lisa, stepson Nick Sargenti and his wife Jessica. Grandchildren include Rhegan Carter; Archimedes and Bremen Davis; Angelina and Logan Bortle; Kaleb, Blake and Landon Sargenti.
A Fireman’s Funeral Service will be held at 10am on November 14th 2019 at Temple Baptist Church, Mims, FL.
