Obituary

David Vaughan Hofius, Sr. of Titusville, Florida passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the age of 89 with his beloved wife Shirley by his side.

David was born in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1931, to father Paul H. Hofius Sr. and mother Rosina E. Vaughan Hofius. The youngest of seven children, David studied mechanical engineering at Penn State University, Youngstown State University and Cleveland State University. He helped out on his family’s small farm and worked any odd jobs he could find starting at an early age. His work ethic and desire to take care of his family led to him enlisting in the Army at age 23. He worked stateside in California from 1954 -1958, then served in the Army Reserves for 8 years.

At the end of his service in the Army, David returned to Pennsylvania and started Tech Tools, a tool and die shop.  He went on to start and sell several other businesses including The Hofius Company & Associates and Trinetics Group, Inc.  He had a passion for problem solving and was awarded numerous patents from children’s toys to zippers to ultrasonic welders.  He also had a passion for sailing and owned several sailboats with the most memorable being the one he bought in Alaska, repaired in Florida and sailed at Presque Isle in Erie, PA.

He married Shirley J. Sankey, a registered nurse, in 1960 and they enjoyed 61 years as husband and wife.   They enjoyed traveling and were blessed to have been able to go as far as Asia and Australia.  David delighted in spending time with his family, playing cards with his grandchildren, and going on family cruises with all of them.

What was most dear to his[sp4]  heart was David’s conviction that a relationship with Jesus Christ was the key to salvation. Many might not know David’s name but know him as the biblical scholar who gave out business cards with what the Bible said to expect in the end times.  His greatest longing was that every member of his family, and those whose paths he crossed, would accept Christ as their savior and spend eternity with him in heaven.

David is survived by his wife Shirley Hofius; children David Hofius, Jr. of Port St. John, FL, Lynn[sp5]  Pierce (Scott) of Concord Twp., OH, Marc Hofius III (Milagros) of Clearwater, FL, Janine Grundy (Jim) of Titusville, FL and Rebecca Flores (Juan) of Titusville, FL; grandchildren Jacquelyn Grundy, Joshua Grundy (Nicole), Zachary Pierce (Michelle), Nathan Flores (Young), Bethany Scarpitti (Joshua), Brianna Garrett (Wesley), Maritza Waddle (Woods), and Mackenzie Hofius.  David was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lawrence and Mark and his sisters Pauline, Florence and Margaret. He is survived by his brother Paul Hofius (Noreen) of Jefferson City, MO.

David took seriously the Lord’s command to take care of orphans and gave generously in response. People wishing to honor David’s lifelong commitment to provide for orphans can make donations to Mission Possible (www.ourmissionispossible.org).
