Betty Joyce Mattingly, 93, of Titusville passed away on February 5, 2020 surrounded by family after an 8-month battle with lung cancer.
Betty was born August 26, 1926 in Hartford, CT to James and Hilda (Brockhaus) Stevenson. She was the fourth of five children. She grew up in Hackensack, NJ where she attended Fairmount Elementary and Jr High and graduated from Hackensack High School. She graduated from New York University with BS and MS degrees in Physical Education.
She moved to Titusville in August of 1950 and became a teacher and girls' basketball coach at Titusville High School. Married Arlie William "Bill" Mattingly in June 1953. Left teaching in February 1954 when she and Bill welcomed three children in four years. She returned to teaching in 1964 as a Special Education teacher at many different schools in Titusville. ln 1973 she was the North Brevard Staffing Specialist for the Exceptional Student Education Department and retired in June of 1991.
Betty took pride in her family, having a successful career, being involved in several organizations and making contributions to the community. Being nominated for the Harry E. Lee City Award and presented with the DAR Certificate of Award for Excellence in Community Service were appreciated. Was Past President of Alpha Delta Kappa, Fidelis Chapter; member of the North Brevard Retired Educators Association; as well as Past President of the North Brevard Historical society and Museum for nine years in total and continued as a board member until her death.
Survived by son and daughter-in-law, James and Debra (Boyle) Mattingly, of Port St. John; daughter and son-in-law Lynda (Mattingly) and Steve Siems of Titusville; four grandchildren - Karalynne Sterling McCarthy (Tom) of Orlando, Leslie Siems Lawter (Ken) of Port. St. John, Daniel Siems, Shelley Siems Voorhees (Chad) of Titusville; four great-granddaughters - Catherine and Phoebe McCarthy of Orlando and Brooke and Peyton Voorhees of Titusville. Brother-in-law, Don Connelly of Lexington SC, and many nieces and nephews in many states. Honorary family members - Elizabeth Bradley of Miami, FL, Gwen and Wayne Kemp of Collinsville, IL, and Joey Hodge of Mims, FL. Preceded in death by husband of 52 ½ years, Bill (January 2006), their daughter, Arliene (age 10, May, 1969), four siblings-Dorothy, James "Bud", Bernice, and Jeanne.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15,2020, at First United Methodist Church, 206 S. Hopkins Ave., Titusville, FL 32796 from 10 - 11 a.m. Memorial service at 11 a.m. ln lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Brevard Historical Society, P. O. Box 5265, Titusville, FL 32783 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
