George Sammy Hendrix Jr

August 20, 1921 ~ May 30, 2016 (age 94) 94 Years Old
George Samuel Hendrix Jr. left this world on May 30, 2016, to be with his Lord and Savior. Sam, as most people knew him, was born August 20, 1921 in Lexington, South Carolina. With the economic boom created by the railroad, his parents, George Hendrix Sr. and Iva Bae (Roof) moved to Mims, Florida in the spring of 1925. From the age of four, Sam considered Mims his home. Sam was a proud Titusville High Terrier where he was captain of the football team. Sam continued to be a very active Terrier and helped create the Alumni Association. To honor his dedication to the alumni, anyone choosing to may donate to the Titusville Alumni Association in lieu of flowers. You can contact Titusville High at (321) 264-3100.

Wanting to see what he could see, Sam enlisted in the US Navy the summer of 1941. Proudly serving in WWII and traveling all around the world, Sam received an honorable discharge in June of 1946. Sam loved his country and enjoyed telling the stories of his time and sharing the songs from the Navy.

After his military adventures, Sam drove a truck, owned a sandwich shop on Playalinda Beach, and ran a restaurant. In 1951, he met, fell in love with, and married Myra Aline Carver. They shared almost 42 beautiful years of love, laughter, and a genuine joy that is difficult to mirror before her passing October 14, 1992. Together, they created a legacy with four children: Jeanne Lovell (Robin) of Tampa, FL, Janice Mantlo of Russellville, KY, Tina Carlton (Kenny) of Andersonville, TN, and George Samuel "Sammy" Hendrix III of Mims, FL.

Having lots of life left and a void in his heart, Sam married Effie Futch Hydorn on December 21, 1994. He loved her deeply, and she filled that void and made him happy. Together they spent almost 22 years traveling the country and enjoying their families. Sam's family grew by three sons, Ricky, Chip, and Rob Hydorn all of Titusville, FL.

As a dedicated husband and father, Sam provided for his family over the years by operating a chicken farm, working for Florida Power and Light, running Duffy's Restaurant, and finally, working at the Kennedy Space Center. Sam saw many changes and advances over the 27 years he worked before retiring from the Space Center.

As much as he loved and cared for his family and country, no commitment exceeded his Service to the Lord. Sam was not just a member of First Baptist Church of Mims, after almost 90 years of service, he became a pillar to those that attended. He was always active and remained so until just recently when his health would no longer allow him to continue. Over the years, Sam taught Sunday School and the Royal Ambassadors; however, many will remember him as "Uncle Sammy" from the bus ministry which was dear to his heart.

It is hard to imagine anyone meeting him and not falling in love with his big heart and warm smile. George Samuel Hendrix left a legacy of love and giving through his many friends, but especially through his children, 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

His presence will be sorely missed. Please join his family in honoring his life, remembering his love, and rejoicing in his homecoming. Visitation and Service will be at First Baptist of Mims, Florida with interment at LaGrange Cemetery.
